일명 '훌라송'이라 불리우기도 하는 미국의 군가.

5.18 민중항쟁가의 원곡으로, 80년 새학기가 시작되고 전두환 신군부의 집권 야욕이 노골화 되던

그무렵 이를 간파한 대학가에서 데모가로 불려졌고, 전두환 집권기 내내 애창되었던 걸로 기억된다.

 

 

시위의 현장에서 빠지지 않았던 <훌라송>은 복음성가는 아니지만 복음성가처럼 우리에게 들어온 노래이다. 교회에서 이 노래를 부르며 율동했던 기억이 있다.

“손을 잡고 오른쪽으로 빙빙 돌아라, 손을 잡고 왼쪽으로 빙빙 돌아라.....” 그러나 이 노래는 동요처럼 즐거운 내용의 노래가 아닌 긴 역사와 가슴 아픈 사연을

품고 있는 노래이다.

 19세기 초반, 대영제국은 동인도회사를 지키기 위해서 당시 영국의 식민지였던 아일랜드인을 전쟁터로 보내 싸우게 했다.

이 노래는 당시 전쟁터에 나가서 돌아오기는 했으나 팔과 다리가 잘려 돌아온 남편을 바라보는 아내가 당신을 못 알아보겠다며 비통한 마음으로 부르는

느린 템포의 <Johnny I hardly Knew Ye>이다. 아일랜드인의 영국을 향한 저항의 노래였던것이다.

 이 노래는 미국으로 건너가 남북전쟁당시 북군의 군가로 개작되어 불려졌다. <When Johnny Comes Marching Home>으로 변한 이 노래는 슬픔의 표현은

사라지고 군인들을 격려하는 내용으로 바뀌었다.

원곡의 후루 후루(Hurroo, hurroo)는 후라 후라(Hurrah, Hurrah)로 바뀌었고 템포도 행진곡의 속도로 맞추어졌다.

후라 후라는 다시 우리나라에서 훌라 훌라로 바뀌었다. 우리나라에서 부르는 <훌라송>은 미국 북군 군가가 수입되어 들어온 것이다

빠른 속도로 부르는 <훌라송>은 학내투쟁에서 학생들의 마음을 모으고 투쟁심을 상승시키는 역할을 한다.

앞서 언급한대로 운동가요는 당시의 사안에 따라 가사를 바꾸거나 중요한 단어를 바꾸어

부르는데 이 노래도 자주가사를 바꾸어 불렀다. 1970년대에는 주로 ‘우리들은 정의파다 훌라훌라’, ‘우리들은 정의파다 좋다좋다’라는 가사를 많이 썼기 때문에

제목을 <정의파>라고 부르기도 하고 때로는 <정의가>노래와 혼동해 부르기도 한다. <훌라송>은 86년 이후 노동운동 때 다시 가사가 바뀌어 불렸다.

매우 열린 형식의 노래이다.

  유튜브에 매우 좋은 동영상이 올려져있다. 1980년 5월 서울역에서 불렀던 <훌라송>으로부터 아일랜드의 

<Johnny I hardly Knew Ye>까지 연결하여 역사를 설명하는 동영상이다
